What is KGSP? A basic GKS guide.
What is ''KGSP''?
KGSP stands for Korean Goverment Scholarship Program, nowadays known as GKS (Global Korea Scholarship).
As its name shows, it is a Fully Funded Scholarship by the goverment for studying in a third level, in Korea. So, you can do your bachelors, master, or even a Phd there.
(There are also another Goverment's scholarship that you might be interested in, they are usually fully or almost fully funded: Japan, Denmark, Turkey, Pakistan, Ireland, Thailand, etc.) Comment if you want an Article about it!
It is divided in two convocatories in the year, one for KGSP-U (undergraduates, bachelor) and KGSP-G (Graduate, master, doctoral, phd).
KGSP-U opens in september, and KGSP-G in february, every year.
Here, we will focus on the Undergraduate application.
So, let's start from what everyone is interested in:
And if that isn't enough, they have another little points, like 200K won when you arrive at the begining, 100K more on your monthly stipend if you achieve TOPIK 5 or 6 in your first year of language training, and also 100K if you leave Korea at the end of your studies.
Sounds like a dream, doesn't it?
But well, wanting this isn't enough, you must be a good applicant, be the candidate that they are searching for!
So, what are the requisites?
The basic requeriments ONLY FOR APPLYING (if you don't meet them, you can't apply) are the following ones:
Those are the MUST HAVE requisites, optionals are:
Are you still reading? Great! Let's keep going!
How do we apply?
For applying, there are two ways, called Embassy Track and University Track, you may send your documents by post to the Korean Embassy in your country (personally is okay too), or, you can send your applicantion directly to your desire University in Korea.
But well, those different paths of application have also different characteristics, and you can only aply to ONE, if you apply to both, you will be automatically eliminated.
Let's see what do you need to apply, and how you do it in each track.
Embassy track: I would say its's the most famous one, and usually known as the ''best'', but it is a big lie, because all depends on your situation.
Here, you should choose three different universities for applying. You can choose any major that is 4 years long or shorter (no medicine, Arquitecture in some cases), and also any university elegible in Korea (we will see the list later on).
University track: It is becoming more chosen evey year, because if you are witty enough, you can get it really easily through this track, but risking some factors.
Here, you can only apply for engineering and natural science majors, and also only for regional universities (not located in Seoul, you may also find them as Type A (Seoul) and Type B (regional).
The elegible countries and their quota
Both tracks have different quota for each country, so have it in mind. A lot of countries do have Embassy track quota but not University track quota, as does mine.
Well, the numbers you see right next to every name, are the quota that each country have, this means that every country have a determinate amount of spots available for the final winners, the people they will choose.
In my case, it is only 1, but there are 2, 3, 4 and even more than 10 seats in some countries, depends on the demand and population.
For University track are less quota than for Embassy, but also less people apply to this for the same reason.
Also, those countries that don't have University quota, you can still apply. If you read the highlighted part, the remaining spots will be for the rest of the countries.
Choosing between these two ways of applying can be hard, but it's something that only you can know, as it depends in every single factor of your country, you, and your application.
Comment below if you want an article about this! As well as any other topic, I would love to read you.
But well, is my major available?
If you are really paying attention and do have a good memory, you might already know that we can apply to any major that we can found on the universities that are elegible, if they are 4 year-long-programs or shorter. So, let's see the universities!
Available Universities and their majors
The universities availables differs again, by tracks. As you know, by University track you can only apply to regional ones, so the list is shorter, let's check both.
A good tip:
For Embassy track, you can choose 3 universities, please don't choose all SKY unless you are something similar to Einstein. It's too risky.
For University track, less known University means less applicants, and that means higher chances of being accepted.
All of their majors you can take your time and look them up in the documents provided by StudyInKorea that I'll attach their links and archives at the end.
Okay, so let's get serious...
What documents do you need? Documents submission
All the journey applying to this scholarship is long and stressful, so please start all of this with at least 2 months.
As you can see, it might seems long, but is easier than it looks.
